The Art of Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson.
curated by Mikaela Sardo Lamarche and Fabienne Powell.
Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, two highly accomplished female artists, take us on an inspired visual journey through memory, while weaving in monumental stories of their own journeys ripe with heritage and community. Their stories and journeys, provoke us to more closely examine mythologies of identity, culture, and collective memory. In her essay for the exhibition catalogue, Mikaela Sardo Lamarche states: "A truly compelling narrative has transformative power. As stories become alive and engage us they teach us about our communities, our histories and ourselves. This is true in the artwork of Faith Ringgold and Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson. Integrating the materials and visual language from their African-American heritage with those from the Western tradition, each of these extraordinary artists tell stories which inspire, educate, commemorate and preserve memories both individual and collective. Their narratives weave parables of hope sprinkled with autobiographic details, historical references and universal truths of the human condition."The exhibition is on display January 22 - April 21, 2013 and will have a reception on Friday, February 1st, 5-9pm and a story tour at 7pm with Vanessa Johnson, a Griot and story teller.
